filtering process could not process this item WSS 3.0

I am getting this error in WSS 3.0 when crawling. "The filtering process could not process this item. This might be because you do not have the latest file filter for this type of item. Install the corresponding filter and retry your crawl."

And this is not for .pdf file, but for .docx file. Do I need to install a filter for .docx, .xlsx file. I thought this is Microsoft product and WSS 3.0 will have it in built filter to crawl this.
